This place is a buzz of activity, the usual stench of urine is even starting to lift as neighborhood woman scrub and clean down the hallways. Several men and women are busy in the kitchen, preparing perishable foods that were donated by Food4Less. Veggies and meat are being chopped and added to broth for soups and stews, fresh loaves of bread are coming out of the oven, and fruit is being chopped into fruit salad. Clothes donations have been piling up near the doors, and are being folded and sorted into different piles. An off duty police officer is leaning against the wall near the two who are collecting cash and check donations, making sure that no shenanigans take place when people get busy.

Katherine has been here for a short while, and is sitting on one of the couches with a few of the elderly women who volunteer here at the shelter, knitting needles in hand. Her basket of yarn is at her feet and she seems to be knitting a scarf. The chatter here is lively and happy, despite the heavy snows falling outside.

*

Nolan is here folding the donated clothes and thanking everyone who comes by to drop something off. It's good PR, and the station knows it, so both hosts of Wake Up, Calaveras! Are here being visibly helpful. He's in jeans and a V-neck sweater in a navy blue, smiling his charming smile and signing autographs when asked as part of thanking the community for coming out to help. He looks a little bit tired because, hey, usually this is naptime after finishing up with the show. He's been up since 5 am.

*

"Nice to see you here, Nolan" Kate looks up from her knitting, a big smile on her face. "How are you enjoying the snow?" She asks, shifting on the couch to make room for the man if he wants to settle in. She knows that look of being tired, she's lived it for the past few months. "Need some coffee? Lilah will get you some."

*

Nolan looks over towards the knitting circle and he lets out a little chuff of a laugh. "Always happy to help the community," is his rote reply, which is code for 'like I had a choice'. No sane person tells Heather 'no' when she says to go do something. As donations are slowing and someone comes to spell the man, he moves to settle down on the couch beside Katherine. "I'm still adapting. I lived in Los Angeles for long enough to only see snow on location shoots or for fun on ski trips," he admits.

*

Katherine grins up at Nolan, shaking her head slightly. She understands. She bumps shoulders with Nolan and shows him the scarf she's knitting. "I was hoping to get together with you soon, see if you want to film some promos for the morning show, maybe something like a spotumentary? We go out, see some of the town, talk up why a place is nifty, and then plug the show?" She settles back into knitting again. "It could be fun. I'm trying to get Heather to agree to it."

*

"That sounds like a brilliant idea," Nolan notes, as he looks over the scarf. "I never learned how to knit. I can break down and reassemble an AK-47, but I can't cast on. Go figure. Not a lot of call for a knitting action star in Hollywood." He chuckles genuinely. "And I'm sure Heather will agree to it. Getting our faces on TV more seems to be good for business."

*

Katherine beams at Nolan, setting aside her needles so she can clap her hands. "There are a lot of interesting places around town, and it would be fun to get around and show some of them off, while we plug our show." She picks up her needles again and resumes knitting. "I can show you how to knit, if you want, I do it at home all the time. It's a great way to spend some time and relax." She glances down at the scarf. "Also creates warm things."

*

Nolan looks amused at the offer to learn to knit. "I never say no to learning new things. Though if I end up on the cover of a tabloid with accusations of being a secret grandma, I'm blaming you," he quips. One of the old ladies nearby pulls needles out of her bag for the former actor, and makes gaga eyes at him. Remember that story about the 85 year old producer? Yeah, old ladies love him. He takes the needles awkwardly in his callused hands.

*

Katherine chuckles softly, shrugging as she grins over at Nolan. "You're not a secret grandma, they don't have abs like you do." She glances at the old woman who makes gaga eyes, and giggles softly. She sets down her needles and leans over, showing Nolan how to make a stitch, her hands over his. She does it again, eyebrows raised slightly. "Just like that, take it slow at first, and if it goes bad, we pull it and try again?"

*

Nolan watches carefully, trying to pick up the lesson best he can. He's clumsy with the intricate movements, his hands clearly used to work that is far less delicate. "Oh it's gonna go bad," he mumbles, "I will wind up knitting a hole in the space time continuum because of my ineptitude." It takes him quite a few tries before he seems to get the motions down, and finds his rhythm. He's definitely holding it too tight though, clearly he is knitting armor. He manages to give good natured smiles to the ladies around them, asking for their opinions as he goes, including them.

*

Katherine giggles and shakes her head. "If you do, we can go back in time and get rich. Right? Just go slow, each stitch is a chain, right?" She glances at the old ladies as they take over, and she pushes to her feet, moving to the kitchen. She gets a few bowls of stew, bringing them to knitting group, chatting with the older ladies as she serves them.

*

It's kind of adorable, this big, beefy, manly action star getting advice from little old ladies who cluster around him like a gaggle of grandmas wanting to help him learn. Nolan plays his part perfectly, asking them questions, laughing at his own mistakes, letting them set him right once more. He knows how to engage the public and use his charm in a non-skeevy way. How much of it is the real Nolan is anyone's guess, but the public are eating it up. He finally gives up, citing the indentations on his fingers from holding the yarn so tight. "I need a break, ladies, I'm clearly not tough enough to knit!" That gets a laugh.

*

"Are you tough enough to handle beef stew?" Katherine asks, handing him a bowl once the needles are set aside. "It's good, nice and warm, perfect for a day like today." She pats him gently on the shoulder and moves to take her seat again, her own bowl in hand. "Hopefully the snow won't be too crazy tomorrow, I'd like to be able to get into the studio without a problem."

*

Nolan takes the stew with a grateful smile. "Thank you. Something warm on a cold day is one of those little pleasures in life," he notes. As the little old ladies wander off to their own things, he leans in to lower his voice and just talk with his costar. "So, I meant to ask, catch me up on the folks who were at dinner the other night?" August, Teija, and Sevin.

*

Katherine takes a spoon of her stew, her dark eyes watchful of the women as they disperse to do other things. She tilts her head, and aims a smile at Nolan. "Catch you up? You want to know more about them?" She takes another spoonful, laughing softly. "What do you want to know?"

*

"Is the tattooed one with the high heels going to wind up stalking me in my shower?" Nolan asks, because August looked at him like he was the main course at a buffet.

*

Katherine blinks at Nolan and she laughs loudly. "I wouldn't discount it, but I think she would warn you first? That isn't how stalking goes." Kate makes a face and she leans back in her seat, scooping up more stew. "I mean, you could always come over to dinner more often so she doesn't have to stalk you." She points her spoon playfully at Nolan. "You didn't want to know about the other two, you just wanted to know about her, didn't you?"

*

"Oh no, the others were interesting, I just wanted to handle the possible threat to my purity first," Nolan says with a chuckle. "The gentleman, your boyfriend?" he asks. "And the gunsmith seems interesting. This town has almost as wide a variety of characters as Hollywood, and that says a lot." He digs into his stew.

*

"Threat. To. Your. Purity." Kate squints at Nolan, her head tilted slightly to the side. "Are you pure, Nolan?" She grins and nods as she takes another bite of her stew. "He is, yes." She glances toward Nolan after she takes another bite. "I get a lot of different sorts at the B&B sometimes, but they're all good people, if not a little eccentric."

*

"Only in the eyes of my grandmother fanbase," Nolan assures her. "But yes, you do seem to have a lot of characters living there. I'll definitely stop by for dinner more, if for no other reason than the food is much better than my usual take out." He doesn't really get takeout. He eats rather healthy, but he doesn't advertise that fact.

*

"Only one who lives there is the threat to your purity, the rest live around town as far as I know." Katherine takes another spoon of stew, grinning at Nolan when he says he'll stop by more often. "It would be a pleasure to have you around more, so..just stop by whenever you'd like."

*

"Thank you. The station here is much more family like than the one in Denver. Bigger market there I guess, they had to be on all the time. It's going to take me a while to learn how to relax again," Nolan points out.

*

"It's not easy to relax even when you're…what's the word.." Katherine makes a face, setting her stew aside. "I've been here all my life and I still have trouble relaxing. Some days are better than others." She aims a smile at Nolan, settling back against the couch. "If you ever need someone to help things get more relaxing, just ask. Anytime."

*

"I appreciate the offer," Nolan says sincerely. "I'm sure once I get completely unpacked I'll figure out how to unwind." He sets his empty bowl down and looks around at the people here to help. "This is really a nice turnout, and it's early still. Do you do these things often?"

*

Katherine nods at Nolan, her hands folded and placed in her lap. "How is unpacking going? Are you finding places to put all your things? Did you get a big townhouse?" She glances around the place, a smile forming on her lips. "I try, but I don't have a lot of time on my hands lately. Too many fingers in too many pies."

*

"It's a good size, and it's more just trying to decide where I want everything to be. I'm indecisive like that," Nolan says with a wry smile. "And yes, I was wondering how you hold it together being so busy and pulled in so many different directions at once. I admire the fact you haven't lost your mind yet." Yet.

*

"I have too much house sometimes, when I don't have any guests in." Kate gazes at Nolan, her dark eyes searching his face before she sighs. "I sometimes don't hold it together, but I keep a very careful hold on that in public, trying not to let others know that I have panic attacks that have occasionally sent me to the hospital. It's not fun."

*

"Really?" Nolan asks, surprised, as Kate seems to be a very together person. "Have you thought about easing back on some things? Or maybe getting some help with the B&B side? I need you to stay healthy, Katherine, otherwise I might end up on air with Heather ."

*

Kate gazes at her knees before she smiles at Nolan. "I have eased back on a few things. My personal assistant takes care of most business at the B&B now, and I just pitch in to help when she needs me." She shrugs, chuckling softly. "Don't worry, I'm not gonna end up gone for good."

*

"Well Hallelujah to that, because I am pretty sure Heather would have me weeping in a corner after a week," Nolan teases with a chuckle. "I know she's on me about any other shows I want to do but damn, for now I just want to do the one til I get my bearings, you know?"

*

"Weeping in the corner after a week? I'd give you two days, but she can also be really nice when she wants to be." Katherine chuckles softly and quirks a brow at Nolan. "Any chance we could convince you to come on Naked Voices at some point?" She grins, and shrugs at Nolan. "It would be fun." The pair are seated on a couch, talking quietly.

*

Nolan ponders and he shrugs a bit. "Always a possibility. Though it's hard for me to be really naked when I'm on camera. The actor front comes up automatically these days," he admits. "So it might not be as truthful as you'd hope."

*

"Trust me, I know. You've got a persona, and brushing past that isn't something that you want to do because that's kind of like your armor." Kate holds up a hand, watching Nolan with a slight smile on her face. "Trust me, I get that. I have my own armor, but most of it is made of politeness. If people think of you one way, then ..well it works out sometimes." She covers her heart with her hand and lets her gaze shift over to the door where someone has brought in a box of cans. "I'll keep your secrets, I'm sure my other co-workers will too."

*

August pushes through the doors with a small cardboard box in her arms, hip-checking the door as she turns to slip through, her heeled boots announcing her arrival with the click of each step. Heavy snowfall in the forecast and she's wearing stilettos anyway. She glances around and then heads to the clothing table to drop off a box of donations, smiling a hello to anyone who happens to look up and catch her eye. She hasn't spotted Katherine or Nolan yet. Aside from the outrageous footwear, Aug's is pretty much in a pair of distressed black skinny jeans and a fitted sweater with a deep V neckline. There's a lot of chest tattoo on display, but mostly her ink-showing is limited to that and her hands, since she's wearing a fluffy scarf and her long hair is pulled into an upsweep.

All in black as she is (except the sweater which is a Slytherin green striped number), Aug is looking pale and inky as usual. Her lips are painted black, eyes darkly lined wings with dramatic shadow per usual. "Scuse me, honey, you dropped this." Aug bends the the knee, balancing the box in one arm, as she reaches for a beanie cap on the floor for a grizzled dude just trying to get his dinner on. She wobbles a little, but it's a precarious position in those shoes.

*

"Politeness isn't a mask for me. My mother was very insistent about it when I was growing up. Turns out, it is a currency a lot of people in Hollywood lack. I got a lot of repeat jobs with directors and other actors for being well-mannered on set. Like I said when I joined the team, Mitch would have had his ass bounced long ago if he'd been on one of my sets." Nolan smiles and glances over at the cans too. "I'm going to head back in a bit and work in the kitchen for a while I think." Then there is August in all her glory. "I think we summoned her by mentioning her earlier," he muses.

*

"I'm glad you're on the team, Nolan. It's been good working with you so far." Kate glances over at August, giggling as she gets to her feet to move in her direction. She'll attempt to take the box to help the pale haired woman, grinning. "Welcome, you got here alright, huh?"

*

Aug hands over the beanie, says something quietly to the man, and doesn't even gripe of his eyes wander over the ridiculous amount of ink she's wearing. She gives up the box to Kate, laughing a little as she makes her way to her feet. "Hey, yeah. I overslept big time today. I think all those calories in the Indian food put me into a food coma. It was amazing." She glances around briefly, grey eyes watchful. "What can I do to help? Cooking is out, but I can serve, clean, and fold." Now facing Kate, and noticing Nolan behind her yonder, August can't help but twitch a slightly wider grin. Whatever she's thinking, she doesn't say, unless it's a polite, "Afternoon, Nolan." She keeps her eyes on his face. How's that for good manners?

*

Nolan stands and he moves to the pair, nodding his head in greeting. "August, good to see you again. Thanks for helping out." He clears his throat. "Kate, I'm going to go help with the kitchen prep. I'll see you ladies a bit later I'm sure." He smiles warmly, bows a little, and hustles off to the kitchen.
